October 1,2013

What a great weekend of racing. Prereg for the Atomic SuperPrestige opens Friday and the Cross(Port)quitlam can be done through their site. Below is a race report from Sven Sturm who organized the Vanier Cyclocross Classic.

Despite a storm system delivering  heavy rain at times and gusty winds up to 90 km/h we saw one of the finest editions of Vanier Park Cyclocross racing ever. The hardcore cross crowd battled not only the elements but also the competition until there were only a few left standing. A traditionally fast grassy course turned into race of  attrition with rider after rider succumbing to drive train issues and rolled or flat tires, back spasms and hypothermia, crazy crashes or simply running out of gas. And the spectators? They loved it.

The organizers did the best they could to keep them happy: they delivered hot coffee (thanks to the folks at Umbria Caffe ) and true Belgian waffles (courtesy of Monsignor Olivier from Patisserie Lebeau ) and neutral wheel support (by Vancouver Bike Gallery)while the action took place in the three starts tearing up one of the finest parks in Vancouver. The only interruption was the Kids' race which took place when crew from Steeds Cycles , convinced two dozen of Vancouver's toughest kids to ride from puddle to puddle. Vancouver Superprestige Series by Shimano action at its finest.

The racing itself unfolded a bit different that usual although the top of the leader board met the expectations of the crowd:
In the Elite Women category after retuning from the MTB Worlds BC standout Sandra Walter
(Liv/Giant Canada) turned the screws on the rest and won convincingly while young Maggie Coles-Lyster (Local Ride) took second over Morgan Cabot (Glotman Simpson).
The Elite Master Men proved their toughness where Cory Forrest sealed the deal after the 3rd lap then rode away. The chasers had to settle for 2nd with WheelWizzard Kim Steed (Steed Cycles - what else?) getting the better of Hardman James Birkenbuehl (also Steed Cycles ... hmm!?). In all fairness both worked on the set-up at New Brighton CX a day prior and what if ...
The Elite Men race was a true smack down between Kevin "Calhountador" Calhoun (Rocky Mountain Bikes) and Kevin Noiles (California dreamin' RockLobster/HRS). After a mighty battle on the degrading course one of many flat tires of the day tipped the scale in favour of Calhoun. A seriously freezing Noiles had to enter the pits to change his wheel while being passed by Evergreen Bobby Welbourn (Glotman Simpson) for second place.

We left Vanier Park still in one piece but with a few battle scars which should be gone in a few weeks thanks to the continuous rain. If you want to provide feedback to the Vancouver Parks Board about activities in your favorite parks like Vanier Park or New Brighton please contact City Hall or email them (pbcomment@vancouver.ca). Your input is appreciated and might ensure that we can come back next year.

The organizers would like to thank the dedicated volunteers from West Coast Cycling and TREK Red Truck Racing as well as the City of Vancouver - Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation for the use of the park. Furthermore we are grateful for the support and contribution from our sponsors : Cycles Lambert, Highway 2, Patisserie Lebeau, Caffe Umbria, Shimano, Rocky Mountain Bicycles, Race Face, Schwalbe Tires, Stan's No Tube, Different Bikes, Steed Cycles, Vancouver Bike Gallery, TAG Cycling, Active Life, Uprising Bread, Bandidas, Musette Caffe and Hansen Industries.

Thanks to all who came and hope to see you again at the 2014 Vanier Park CX.

Okay so you probably figured out that Shimano is the sponsor that I was talking about. They are giving us a bunch of MTB shoes as prizes plus a soon to be announced prize for a year end draw. Details on the draw are to be announced but lets just say that attendance in a lot of races increases your odds of winning.

The schedule is up on the calendar and I believe it is the final revision. Again I'm sorry for the delay but Cycling BC is under staffed due to their budget shortfalls so I'm not sure if these races are finalized (lets just assume they are). Starcrossed just went this past weekend. Congrats to Bob Welbourn for his win, Marnie Hambleton for an unfortunate second place, Margeret Ovenell for her Junior win, Morgan Cabot and David Gillam for
their wins and Christian Hansen for his narrow 1 second win as well.

We will be seeing you at New Brighton and Vanier at the end of the month. Please help your race organizers out by pre registering. It saves a lot of time on race day and makes things run smoothly.

Also keep note of the double race weekend on October 5-6th in Bellingham. MFG is partnering with Cascade Cross for 2 races and it should be fun.

Are you getting stoked yet! There's a preliminary schedule up and news that a new series sponsor is stepping up. I won't release the details yet but lets say they are a Global Company that manufactures the best components, wheels and shoes around and they will be giving us these items as draw prizes at the end of the year! Plus you can demo their shoes at races!!!

Happy New Years and just a quick note for this year. With all the changes at Cycling BC we will be working on getting a calendar up sooner than later, info on Nationals and some positive changes for Cyclocross in BC.

Stay tuned

November 29,2012

Last race of the year at the South Surrey Athletic Park on Saturday. Not very often our season goes into December. Get out there and rip it up. Then make sure to get to the Cycling BC AGM and support Matt Klymson from West Coast racing as the new VP of CX. And stay tuned as the 2013 schedule will be up sooner than you think

Nationals is coming up and they are looking for volunteers. See Jeff Hanninen at the next race for info or contact him at jeffhanninen@yahoo.com

Again another great weekend. Epic CX weather making for an epic race. 210 racers made it the biggest CX Provincials ever and we had a great time at the park. Keep an eye out on this page as we may need to do some work at the park and I could use some help. Results are posted.

Pumpkin Cross is up next Sunday. Check out the link on the calendar and pre register to save time and money.

Escape Velocity GP of Cross

On Sunday, October 7, Team Escape Velocity and Garneau Evolution are pleased to present the Escape Velocity GP of Cross at Port Coquitlam’s Lions Park.

Look:  it is Turkey Weekend, so get your ‘cross bike ready, come out and race.  After the race you can go home to T-Giving dinner and throw down multiple plates of cooked bird, mashed potatoes, candied yams and pumpkin pie without feeling too guilty about it.

Although our expert course designers are still haggling over the final course details you can expect a mainly flat, grassy course complete with an off camber berm section, a ride-able (maybe.....) pea gravel pit through the kids playground (NOTE:  kids will be removed to comply with UCI regulations) and at least one set of barriers.
